Nobody can hand you a list of 'best' plug-in solar kits, honestly. The rules are new. The safest thing we can do is teach you to check a kit yourself before you buy it. Here's exactly what to look for.
What is the ENA Type Test Register?
Every plug-in solar device sold in the UK has to be type tested against the G98 standard first. The results go on the ENA Type Test Register, which runs on the ENA Direct Connect platform. Look the kit up there before you buy, using the exact model name on the box.
Why 'submitted for testing' isn't good enough
A maker has to register the device and get confirmation it passed, before the kit goes on sale. Submitting a device for registration isn't proof it's compliant. If a listing only says 'submitted' or 'pending', treat that as a kit that isn't cleared yet.
What has to be in the box?
A proper kit is a complete product. It has at least one solar panel, an inverter, a lead with the maker's own plug fitted, and a mounting system. All parts are sold together. It's built to plug into a normal UK socket using that one lead and plug, nothing else. A mount held on with only cable ties, rope, tape, bungee cords or straps isn't allowed. The kit needs a proper mounting system.
What should the label tell you?
The label has to say that telling your network operator, called your DNO, about the hook-up is mandatory. It must link to instructions on how to do it. It also has to say only one inverter, up to 800 VA, can be plugged in per household circuit. If a label is missing either statement, that's a red flag.
