Balconies and flats are where the new plug-in solar rules bite hardest. Some walls and balconies are banned outright, whatever kit you buy. Here's exactly which ones, and what to check before you spend any money.
Which walls and balconies are banned?
Plug-in solar can't go on aluminium composite material (ACM) or metal composite material (MCM) cladding. These are the metal-faced panel systems used on many block exteriors. It also can't go on high pressure laminate (HPL) cladding, a dense compressed-wood-fibre panel. Timber cladding and timber balconies are banned too. These are banned outright, regardless of which kit you buy.
What if my building is being re-clad for fire safety?
If your building is under external wall fire safety remediation, plug-in solar isn't allowed there either. The same applies to similar building safety remediation work. This follows the same fire-safety thinking as the cladding ban. Ask your building manager if remediation work is planned or under way before you buy anything.
How does it have to be mounted?
Wherever it is allowed, a plug-in kit needs a real mounting system, not a workaround. Cable ties, rope, string, tape, bungee cords or straps on their own aren't allowed as the sole fixing. The mount has to come with the kit and be fitted properly to whatever surface it's rated for.
What should renters and leaseholders check first?
If you rent or hold a lease, check your tenancy agreement or lease first. Do this before fitting anything to a balcony or wall. Ask your freeholder or managing agent if you're not sure. That's a practical step, not a legal rule we're stating here. Also read the kit's own instructions, since the maker has to flag any planning restrictions that apply to their product.
